About Trevor

Trevor Giertuga is a long-serving city councillor and community leader with deep roots in Thunder Bay.

Trevor's commitment to care and service began in healthcare, where he worked as a registered nurse, developing a strong foundation in compassion, listening, and supporting people during vulnerable moments in their lives. That early experience shaped his approach to public service.

He later continued his career in public service and leadership roles, including where he served as Deputy Superintendent of Programs and Deputy Superintendent of Administration at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre. He has also served as a Director/Administrator with St. Joseph's Care Group and previously owned and operated small businesses in Thunder Bay.

Trevor is married to Chelsea, and he is a proud father of two children, Travis and Madison. His son, Travis, passed away tragically in 2022, and their family continues to carry his memory with them.

Trevor believes public service must be built on accessibility, follow-through, and respect. He is committed to returning calls, addressing concerns, and ensuring residents are heard and supported.

He remains focused on building a more vibrant, inclusive, safe, and welcoming Thunder Bay while balancing fiscal responsibility with the services residents expect and deserve.

Experience & Readiness for Mayor

When Trevor Giertuga was first elected in 2000, he acknowledges he did not yet have the full experience or leadership capacity required to immediately operate at the level demanded by senior municipal leadership. Like many new councillors, there was a learning curve in understanding the complexity of City Hall and decision-making.

Over the past 25 years, that experience has been earned through continuous service, steady responsibility, and seven consecutive terms on City Council, building deep knowledge of municipal governance, budgeting, infrastructure planning, and community needs.

He believes this experience is critical: the role of Mayor requires someone who can step in and lead immediately. While others may need time to learn the job, Trevor has already spent decades building the knowledge, relationships, and judgment required to govern effectively from day one.

Leadership & City Building Experience

First Image

Trevor Giertuga serves as Chair of the Growth Standing Committee, where he plays a key leadership role in shaping development and planning decisions for the city.

He was also involved in the development and implementation of Thunder Bay's 10-Year Growth Plan, which includes over 100 key action items designed to support economic development, infrastructure investment, neighbourhood revitalization, increased safety, and long-term city growth.

This reflects a practical, results-driven approach to governance.

Trevor is clear in his philosophy:
He will not bring experiments to the council table — he will bring proven results.

Campaign Priorities

Smart Growth

Smart Growth is the foundation of Trevor's plan for Thunder Bay. It means making thoughtful, strategic decisions about how the city develops so that every investment works harder for residents. Growth allows us to maintain services and improve without continually going to the taxpayers for increases that they can't afford.

Smart Growth gives us the opportunity to:

  • Improve infrastructure without unnecessary delay or waste
  • Create safer streets and reduce crime through better planning and stronger investment
  • Support meaningful economic development and attract long-term investment
  • Provide good jobs for our children
  • Strengthen neighbourhoods and essential services.

It is about building a city that grows responsibly, manages costs wisely, and delivers better results for residents.
